“Mdumbi Backpackers is a community-driven incentive which strives to promote community involvement in sustainable eco-tourism. Mdumbi has a unique ownership model due to the fact that the local employees are part owners of the business and share in its profit.
Aside from this,, Mdumbi Backpackers supports staff members in running their own personal businesses to generate even more income. From Mama Nowethu’s bread to Mama Nosekile’s laundry service, you can be sure that your money goes to the right place.
Mdumbi was honoured by the World Responsible Tourism Awards and won the silver prize for “best for poverty reduction.”
Mdumbi Backpackers helped to establish TransCape, a local nonprofit that aims to tackle the significant education, health and socio-economic challenges in the community. Transcapes’ mission is to provide access to the resources, support, and knowledge necessary for communities to initiate the process of change towards a better quality of life. Guests are welcome to visit their projects.
